Mario Bros.

You can play alone, or team up with a friend as Mario and Luigi tackle this underground adventure together. There are plenty of cagey critters to conquer - turtles, crabs and fireflies, to mention a few. You'll progress through endless levels of challenge collecting gold coins and building your score as you go.

All manner of nasty creatures are emerging from the pipes and it's up to Mario and Luigi to clean things up. Knock all of them over and then kick them out to clear each phase.

Enemies can be knocked down by striking their platforms from beneath, but you will need to go up and knock them out in order for them to be defeated for good. Once an enemy has been removed, a coin will emerge from the pipes. Collect it before it disappears into the bottom pipes to earn even more points.

Knocked down enemies won't wait around forever and will get back on their feet after enough time passes. If they recover, they'll be in a frenzied state and will move much faster.

The angle of your jump can have a huge effect. If you hit an enemy straight up, he will land right there, possibly blocking any more enemies from coming through. If you your jump hits them from the side, they can be sent flying forward or backward. By knowing which jump to use and when, you can control the flow of enemies as they pour through the stage.

Using the POW in the center is your panic button that will knock all enemies down at the same time. There are only three uses before it disappears, so use it sparingly.

Turtle
Slowly patrols the area, walking over ledges and reversing course if they collide with anything

Crab
These sturdy creatures will need to be hit twice to be knocked over — with only one hit, they will be put into a frenzy

Fighter Fly
To knock these jumping flies over, you will need to time your own jump at the moment when they are on the ground

Green fireballs appear from the sides of the stage and travel straight through horizontally. Red fireballs are more dangerous as they move at angles by bouncing between platforms.

When Freezie appears, he will move down towards a platform and attempt to freeze it. If successful, this ice-covered surface will force you to slide if you try to stop suddenly.

By exiting on one side of the stage, both you and enemies will loop back around to the other side. Always keep an eye on all enemies to predict what path they will take next.

Mario Bros.

Before Mario and Luigi found themselves in the Mushroom Kingdom, they were just regular plumbers from Brooklyn, protecting the sewers from giant turtles, crabs, and boxing flies. As a port of an early arcade game, the controls are a bit rough, but they're not terrible. However, it can't compare to the platforming excellence of its successor, Super Mario Bros. This is crucial because the angle of your jump is a key part of the game; it can send an enemy below for easy access, knock them back for multiple hits, or even create a barrier to redirect oncoming foes. Despite the less-than-perfect controls, the game is solidly balanced, requiring you to strategize how to handle the flow of enemies from the top of the stage.

In most games, even on the NES, a multiplayer feature seems more like an afterthought, but Mario Bros. feels like it was designed entirely with it in mind. There's plenty of room for cooperative and competitive play, leaving it entirely up to you how you want to approach the game. You can help each other by being on different levels so enemies can be knocked out almost instantly, or even divert enemies that are about to reach your partner. Alternatively, you can block the other player from defeating a downed enemy in time or even push them off ledges into oncoming enemies and fireballs.

While the multiplayer mode is a standout feature of Mario Bros, it's important to remember that this is an arcade game at heart — it wasn't intended for marathon sessions. Still, if you're looking for a great addition to your multiplayer collection, you won't want to pass this one by.
