Joust

In the medieval age, knights were proving their skills and bravery by playing the game called Joust. In the future well beyond our knowledge, the knights of hyperspace are playing their version of Joust. They saddle up the space ostrich, and fight with aliens. You must adjust yourself to this unknown environment called hyperspace. You are not fighting for fame or glory, you are fighting for your own life. Knock the aliens off before they get to you. It is not an easy task, but somebody must do it. Can you be the survivor of this space fight? Good Luck! Believe me you will need it.

In Joust, you defeat opponents by bumping into them from above. At an even level, you will simply bounce away. Expert control over your ostrich will be needed to get into position, while preventing the Buzzard Riders from getting the drop on you.

The enemy Buzzard Riders come in several forms, each more dangerous than the last:

Bounder
These slow moving knights aren't much faster than you and lose altitude faster

Hunter
Faster moving knights that will rapidly change position to follow you

Shadow Lord
Moving at lightning fast speeds, they can fly straight and aggressively

The Pterodactyl will appear if the wave drags on too long. Having the highest lance will have no effect against this fearsome beast; it can only be defeated by striking it directly in its maw.

A defeated opponent will drop an egg. After a short period of time, if it lands safely on a platform, a Buzzard Rider will hatch from it as a stronger variant. Collect them first to prevent them from taking to the skies once again.

As the wave begins, Buzzard Riders will materialize from the spawn ports located around the battleground. All combatants enjoy a brief invincibility but once you move, it's game on.

In Wave 3, the Troll's fire will burn away the bridge, exposing the lava beneath. If you fly too close, the Troll's hand will come up to grab you. Fly rapidly to break his grasp.

Every 5th wave will be a special Egg Wave where eggs appear around the stage. They will begin hatching soon so collect as many as possible before then.

Exiting on one side of the arena will return you to the other side of the screen. Use this to your advantage to drop in on your opponents and make sure they don't do the same to you.

Taking and holding the high ground isn't easy. Holding the [B] button will make your ostrich continually flap its wings to gain altitude and speed quickly. Pressing [A] will make him flap once, allowing you to set a rhythm for precise positioning. Only experience will teach you when to switch between the two in different situations.

As you advance through the waves, the battleground will transform. In addition to the bridge burning away, platforms and their spawn ports will periodically vanish. Eventually, you will be left with a wide open space for chaotic aerial combat.

Joust

Joust is a chaotic, action-packed game that will have you flying around the arena, colliding with other ostrich-riding knights as you attempt to get the higher lance. The detailed physics is one of the real selling points of the game — the faster you fly, the harder it becomes to stop or change direction. Everything you collide with will bounce you back, whether it’s a ledge, an enemy, or even the ceiling. Bouncing off one defeated enemy may deliver you into the waiting wings of another above. At full speed, your ostrich can fly to the point of being out of control. Fortunately, you have two buttons for flying: one for rapid flapping and the other for a single flap. Mastering these controls allows you to change direction almost instantly and redirect toward your next target.

The egg system adds a nice twist to the gameplay, preventing it from becoming too repetitive with just defeating enemies. By requiring you to descend to collect them before they hatch, you are forced into vulnerable positions on the lower parts of the arena. However, there is only one enemy type with three variants, plus the 'invincible' pterodactyl, so don't expect much variety without a second player thrown into the mix. Since the other player is treated as a potential combatant and vice versa, it's up to both of you to decide whether to compete or cooperate.
