Adventure Island II

Well, that Evil Witch Doctor refuses to give up! Princess Leilani may be safe, but her sister, Tina, has just been nabbed. And this time you've got real trouble. Because not one, but eight perilous islands stand between you and your honey. Get set to battle dinosaurs, survive avalanches and out fight the Evil Witch Doctor's nastiest ghouls. It'll be tough, that's for sure. So just remember sweet Tina, and how grateful she'll be when you come to her rescue!

Throughout Adventure Island, you will come across eggs that can be broken open for items to help Master Higgins on his quest:

Stone Axe
Throw at enemies from across the screen

Skateboard
Can move quickly, but you can't stop, and also lets you survive hitting an enemy

Honeygirl
She will hover behind Master Higgins for a short period of time making him invincible

Milk
Fully restores Master Higgin's energy and gives 2000 points

Key
Reveals an ascending platform that takes Master Higgins to a bonus stage

Grapefruit
Master Higgins hates this stuff and it will slowly drain his energy over time

In addition to helpful items, eggs will sometimes contain dinosaur friends that Master Higgins can ride:

Blue Camptosaurus
Can destroy enemies and some hazards like rocks and fire with its tail

Red Camptosaurus
Shoots a fireball out of its mouth to defeat enemies at range

Elasmosaurus
His swimming ability will make any underwater area a breeze

Pteranodon
Gives you the ability to fly over the whole level — just keep an eye out for birds

If you finish a level with a Stone Axe or one of your dinosaur friends, you can save them away to be used on later difficult stages. Since you can see the type of area you are about to enter, this can give you a huge advantage.

Gone are the days where Master Higgins only had a single island to explore. There are a total of 8 new islands, each containing between 9 and 14 possible areas to venture through.

Master Higgins will need to go through 7 of these areas before confronting the island's boss. The path you take is determined by the egg received at the end of the last stage. The first and last levels will always be the same.

As you explore the islands, Master Higgins will lose stamina. Grab any fruit you see to restore his energy and prevent him from eventually fainting from fatigue.

The islands holds many dangers for Master Higgins. Tripping over a rock will reduce his stamina and falling on a fire or being crushed by a boulder will put an early end to his adventure.

The new islands hold challenges that will keep Master Higgins on his toes as he plunges into the unexplored wilderness.

To conquer an island, you will have to defeat its boss. From a dark cave, to an underwater lair, and even high up in the clouds, each boss has its own hideout and attack pattern.

Adventure Island II
Adventure Island II features more than double the amount of stages than the original, spread across 8 different islands. Your progression through each island is altered by your choice of egg in the end-stage minigame, making each playthrough different than the last. Though there are many more areas, they are much shorter, shifting the focus from quick thinking platforming to fighting or avoiding enemies. What continues to set this series apart from other platformers is the endurance system. You will constantly need to keep an eye out for any fruit to replenish Master Higgins' energy, especially as they grow more sparse in later levels.

The real change is the introduction of new dinosaur friends that Master Higgins can ride. Like Mario's Yoshi, they give special abilities that you don't have on your own. Another change is the improved variety of bosses. Instead of facing the same boss every time, each island has its own boss with a unique attack pattern that takes advantage of the layout of its lair. If you enjoyed the first Adventure Island, give this a try — it's essentially an enhanced version, perfect for those who want to pick up where it left off.
