Princess Toadstool has been kidnapped by the evil King Koopa and the only one who can save her is Mario, a plumber from Brooklyn. Koopa's army of Goombas, Koopa Troopas, Bloopers and Hammer Brothers aren't the only dangers he is up against. The Mushroom Kingdom itself can be a dangerous place and one missed step or wrong jump can mean certain doom.
Mario doesn't have to go it on his own though. Besides his brother Luigi (played alternatively by player 2), there are powerups that can be picked up that give you added powers. The Mushroom will allow you to survive being hit, the Flower allows Mario to shoot fireballs, and the Starman grants temporary invincibility.
There are many secret areas that can be found - often by going down pipes found throughout levels. They don't all lead somewhere though! These shortcuts and warp zones can drastically change Mario's course through the Mushroom Kingdom. Super Mario Bros. boasts eight worlds with four stages each... and a showdown with King Koopa at each world's castle.
